How to choose cricket shoes
Footwear is chosen on surface and on role, and getting either wrong causes injury rather than just discomfort.
Spikes, rubber, or hybrid
- Full spike - metal studs across forefoot and heel. Maximum grip on grass. Correct for bowlers and for batting on turf.
- Half spike / hybrid - spikes in the forefoot, rubber in the heel. A compromise for players moving between surfaces.
- Rubber sole - no metal. Required for indoor centres and synthetic surfaces, where spikes damage the surface and offer no benefit.
Indoor nets and most synthetic wickets require rubber soles. Cricket For All's indoor lanes at Gilles Plains are no exception - bring rubber-soled shoes.
Bowling shoes versus batting shoes
Bowlers, especially fast bowlers, land with forces of several times body weight through the front foot. Bowling-specific shoes have reinforced heel counters, a stiffer midsole and additional forefoot cushioning. Batting and fielding shoes prioritise lateral support and lightness. A fast bowler in lightweight batting shoes is a stress-fracture risk over a season.
Fit
Buy cricket shoes with a thumb-width of space at the toe: the foot slides forward under braking and in the delivery stride. Try them on with the socks you play in, late in the day when feet have swollen. Width matters as much as length - a narrow shoe on a wide foot causes the black toenails and blistering that plague long spells.
Care
Remove and dry inners after play. Clean spikes and check they are tight before every match - loose spikes strip the sole plate thread and then cannot be replaced. Carry a spike spanner and spares.
Cricket footwear and injury
Bowling is among the highest-load actions in sport. A fast bowler's front foot strikes the ground at between five and nine times body weight, several hundred times across a match. Footwear is the only equipment between that force and the skeleton, which is why cricket shoes are specified by role rather than sold as generic sports shoes.
Why bowlers need bowling shoes
Bowling-specific shoes carry:
- A reinforced heel counter to control rearfoot motion at landing.
- A stiffer midsole through the arch to resist collapse under load.
- Additional forefoot cushioning for the drive phase.
- Often a higher cut for ankle support.
Lumbar stress fractures and navicular injuries in young fast bowlers are strongly associated with load, technique and footwear. A junior bowler in lightweight batting shoes across a season is carrying avoidable risk.
Batting and fielding shoes
Lighter, lower cut, built for lateral movement and quick direction change rather than vertical load. Fine for batting, fielding and part-time bowling; not appropriate for a genuine bowling workload.
Sole types by surface
| Sole | Surface | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Full spike | Turf | Best grip; standard for bowlers |
| Half spike / hybrid | Turf and hard | Compromise for players moving between surfaces |
| Rubber | Indoor, synthetic, hard | Required indoors; spikes damage synthetic surfaces |
Indoor centres including Cricket For All's Gilles Plains lanes require rubber soles.
Fitting
Cricket shoes are fitted with more toe room than street shoes - roughly a thumb-width. The foot slides forward under braking in the delivery stride and when turning for a second run, and a foot that hits the end of the shoe repeatedly produces black toenails and bruising.
Fit late in the day with playing socks on. Width matters as much as length: a narrow shoe on a wide foot causes blistering across the metatarsal heads that no amount of taping fixes.
Spikes and maintenance
Spikes are consumable. Check tightness before every match - a loose spike works its way out and strips the sole plate thread, after which that position cannot take a new spike and the shoe is effectively finished. Carry a spanner and spares.
Clean soles after play. Dried mud in the spike housings makes removal impossible later.
Drying
Remove insoles and dry shoes away from direct heat. Heat shrinks and hardens the upper and can delaminate the sole. Newspaper inside the shoe draws moisture without heat.
Cricket footwear terms
- Spike / stud - the metal screw-in point providing grip on turf.
- Sole plate - the rigid plate carrying the spike housings.
- Heel counter - the reinforced structure around the heel controlling rearfoot motion.
- Midsole - the cushioning layer between outsole and upper.
- Half spike - forefoot spikes with a rubber heel.
- Delivery stride - the final bowling stride, where front-foot impact load peaks.
Common questions about cricket footwear
Can I wear spikes in indoor nets?
No. Indoor centres and synthetic surfaces require rubber soles - spikes damage the surface and provide no grip benefit. Cricket For All's indoor lanes at Gilles Plains require rubber soles.
What is the difference between bowling and batting shoes?
Bowling shoes have reinforced heel counters, stiffer midsoles and extra forefoot cushioning to handle the several-times-bodyweight impact of the delivery stride. Batting and fielding shoes are lighter and prioritise lateral support. A fast bowler in batting shoes is a stress-fracture risk.
How should cricket shoes fit?
Leave a thumb-width at the toe: the foot slides forward under braking and in the delivery stride. Fit with playing socks, late in the day. Width matters as much as length - narrow shoes on wide feet cause blistering and black toenails over long spells.
How often do spikes need replacing?
Check tightness before every match and replace worn spikes promptly. Spikes worn to stubs strip the sole-plate thread, after which the shoe cannot take new spikes and is effectively finished. Carry a spanner and spares.
Half spikes or full spikes?
Full spikes for turf, particularly for bowlers. Half spikes suit players moving between grass and harder surfaces. If you play exclusively on turf, full spikes give better grip and a more secure delivery stride.
What to buy alongside
Spare spikes and a spike key are worth buying with any spiked shoe.
