How to choose wicketkeeping gear

Keeping equipment is specialised and cannot be substituted with batting equivalents.

Keeping gloves

Webbed between thumb and index finger - this is what distinguishes them from batting gloves and what makes a one-handed catch possible. The palm is soft leather for feel and to deaden the ball; the backs are padded but far less rigid than batting gloves, because the keeper needs to feel the ball into the hands.

Fit should be snug with the fingers reaching the ends. Sizes run Boys / Youth / Small Adult / Adult. Gloves are always sold as a pair and are handed by design.

Inners

Cotton or chamois inners are mandatory, not optional. Keepers take hundreds of impacts a session and the inner is the primary shock layer inside the glove. Wicketkeeping: why the equipment is different

A wicketkeeper takes more repetitions than anyone else on the field. Across a day they will rise from a squat several hundred times and take the ball hundreds of times, sometimes at pace off an edge, sometimes turning sharply from a spinner. Equipment designed for batting does not survive that, and does not allow it.

The webbing

The web between thumb and index finger is the defining feature of a keeping glove. It creates a continuous surface into which the ball can be taken one-handed, and it is what makes a diving take possible. Keeping pads

Shorter and lighter than batting pads, with a flatter knee roll and less bulk behind the knee. The keeper's squat requires the pad to fold; a batting pad's knee roll fights that fold, slows the rise to the stumps and causes knee and lower back fatigue over a long day.

Keeping pads protect the shin and instep against balls that beat the gloves and against deflections, which is a lower-energy impact profile than facing a bowler - hence the lighter build.

Helmets for keepers

A keeper standing up to the stumps is closer to the bat than any fielder and takes deflections at short range with no reaction time. Cricket Australia mandates helmets for junior keepers standing up, and it is standard practice at senior level. The helmet should meet the same standard as a batter's, with the grille correctly set.

Care

Keeping gloves absorb more sweat than any other item of cricket equipment. Air them after every session - never sealed in the bag - and dry away from direct heat, which hardens the palm leather permanently. Replace inners regularly rather than washing the gloves themselves. A pair of keeping gloves given basic care lasts several seasons; the same pair left damp in a bag lasts one.
