How to choose batting gloves

Gloves are the piece of equipment most often bought a size too big, and the one where fit most directly affects both safety and technique.

Fit

The fingertips should sit a few millimetres short of the end of each glove finger, with no space for the finger to slide forward under impact. A glove that is too long moves on the hand, which both reduces bat control and lets protection sit off the joint it is meant to cover. Sizes run Boys / Youth / Small Adult / Adult (Men's), and left-hand and right-hand variants refer to the bottom hand, so a right-handed batter takes a right-hand pair.

Protection design

• Sausage fingers - individual padded rolls, the traditional design. More flexible, generally lighter.
• Bar / cotton-bar - horizontal bars across the fingers, more coverage across the knuckle line.

Where the ball actually hits a batting glove
