How to choose a cricket helmet

Helmets are the one purchase where standards compliance, fit and age matter more than brand or price.

Safety standards

Modern cricket helmets are tested to BS7928:2013 (the British Standard, including the junior sizes annex) and in Australia commonly reference AS/NZS equivalents. The standard covers both impact attenuation and, critically, grille deflection - the test that a cricket ball cannot pass between the peak and the grille under impact. Helmets predating the 2013 standard do not pass this test and should not be used.

Cricket Australia mandates helmet use for junior players batting, wicketkeeping up to the stumps, and fielding close in.

The gap between peak and grille

This is the single most important fit check. The gap must be too small for a cricket ball to pass through, and it must stay too small under impact - which is why adjustable-grille helmets must be set correctly and then locked. As a working check, the gap should be no more than the width of the ball at any point, and standard-compliant helmets are designed so a correctly fitted grille cannot open beyond it.

Fit

Measure head circumference just above the eyebrows and around the widest point at the back.

Shell materials

• ABS / composite shells - the standard, durable and cost-effective.
• Carbon composite / titanium grille - lighter for the same protection, noticeably so over a long innings, at a significant price premium. Titanium grilles are typically 30-40% lighter than steel.
• Steel grille - heavier, cheaper, and entirely adequate protection.

Why cricket helmet standards changed

Cricket helmets were largely unregulated until serious incidents forced a rethink. The current British Standard, BS7928:2013, was written specifically to address the failure mode that older helmets shared: the ball passing between the peak and the grille rather than striking the shell.

The 2013 standard introduced a grille-deflection test in which a cricket ball is fired at the gap under controlled conditions. A compliant helmet must not allow the ball through, and must not allow the grille to deflect far enough for contact with the face. A junior annex covers smaller head sizes, where the same gap is proportionally larger and therefore more dangerous.

This is why helmet age matters independently of condition. A pre-2013 helmet in perfect cosmetic order has not passed the test that matters most.

The peak-to-grille gap in practice

On fixed-grille helmets the gap is set by the manufacturer. On adjustable helmets it is set by the user, and this is where club cricket goes wrong: a grille adjusted for comfort rather than safety, or adjusted and not locked, can open under impact.

The working check: with the helmet on and the grille locked, no point of the gap should admit a cricket ball. If a ball can be pressed into the opening anywhere along its length, the setting is wrong.

Sizing and fit

Measure head circumference with a tape just above the eyebrows and around the widest point at the back.

Grille. Steel grilles are heavier, cheaper and protect to the same standard. Titanium grilles are typically 30-40% lighter, which reduces neck fatigue and forward weight. Both pass the same test - the difference is comfort, not safety.

Liner. The energy-absorbing foam inside the shell. This is the component that actually manages impact, and it is single-use in the sense that it compresses permanently.

Neck and stem guards

Attachments protecting the back of the neck below the shell became widespread after high-profile injuries. Where a helmet accepts one, it addresses a genuine gap in coverage for a ball that beats the batter and strikes behind the ear or at the base of the skull.

Replacement

Replace a helmet:

• After any direct ball impact to shell or grille, even without visible damage. The liner compresses once.
• If the grille is bent, even slightly.
• Every three to five years regardless of use, as liner foam hardens with age.
• Whenever it no longer fits - particularly relevant for growing juniors.

Second-hand helmets are the one item of cricket equipment that should not be bought used: impact history is invisible and determines whether the liner still works.

Helmet terms

• Grille - the metal cage protecting the face, in steel or titanium.
• Peak - the rigid brim above the eyes.
• Peak-to-grille gap - the space between them; must be too small for a ball to pass through, under impact as well as at rest.
