Cricket accessories

Small items that materially affect how equipment performs and how long it lasts.

• Bat face protection (Extratec, Fibretec) - an adhesive anti-scuff sheet applied to the bat face. Extends blade life considerably by containing surface cracking, at a negligible weight cost. Recommended on any English willow bat.
• Edge and toe protection - Fibretex tape on the edges and a toe guard (often Shoe Goo or a moulded guard) protect the two areas that fail first, particularly on damp Australian outfields where the toe absorbs moisture.
• Bat repair tape and twine - for handle bindings and minor edge splits between proper repairs.
• Raw linseed oil - for unprotected blade faces only. Sparingly: over-oiling adds weight and deadens the blade.
• Mallets - for knocking in. A proper knocking-in mallet is shaped and weighted for hours of use.
• Spike spanners and spare spikes - a bowler who loses a spike mid-spell without a spare is finished for the day.
• Scorebooks and scoring apps - club requirement in most junior and senior competitions.

Protecting a bat: what actually works

A cricket bat is a consumable made of natural fibre, and most of what shortens its life is preventable with items costing a fraction of the bat.

Face protection

An anti-scuff sheet is a self-adhesive protective film applied to the blade face. It does not stop the willow compressing, but it contains surface cracking, prevents cracks from opening and spreading, and protects against the abrasion of a rough outfield or a hard ball. It adds a few grams. On any English willow bat it is worth applying from new.

Cricket For All applies face protection as part of the Bat Match Ready service and stocks the material separately.

Edge protection

Edges take glancing impacts and split along the grain. Fibre tape along the edges contains this. Bats with pronounced edges - which is most modern bats - benefit most, because the deep edge that increases the hitting area also increases the exposed area.

Toe protection

Australian outfields are damp early and late in the day, and willow absorbs moisture through the exposed end grain at the toe. The toe then swells, softens, and splits on a yorker. A toe guard or a coat of a flexible sealant prevents the most common single mode of bat failure.

Oil

Raw linseed oil feeds unsealed willow and slows moisture loss. The correct quantity is very small: roughly a teaspoon worked into face, edges and toe, no more than three times a season. A bat with a pre-applied protective face should not be oiled through the sheet.

Over-oiling is common and harmful. Excess oil soaks in, adds weight, and deadens the blade's rebound. More oil is not better care.

Knocking-in mallets

A shaped, weighted knocking-in mallet applies force correctly across hours of preparation. A regular hammer or a ball in a sock does not distribute force the same way and risks localised damage. Cricket For All knocks in bats bought in store free of charge, which for most buyers removes the need.

Repair consumables

Handle twine, edge tape and repair adhesive cover minor damage between proper repairs. A lifting handle binding should be dealt with immediately - left alone it becomes a re-handle.

Bat care terms

• Anti-scuff sheet - adhesive film applied to the blade face to contain cracking.
