How to choose a cricket bat

A bat is chosen on four things, in this order: willow type, size, weight and profile. Grade and brand matter less than any of them.

Willow type

English willow Kashmir willow
Feel Lighter for its size, better rebound off the face Denser, harder, less responsive
Durability Softer, needs knocking in, marks more readily Very durable, tolerates poor-quality balls
Preparation Knocking in essential before match use Minimal preparation needed
Suits Club, grade, school first XI and above Beginners, fast-growing juniors, social and indoor play

English willow is what almost every competitive player uses. Kashmir willow is not "worse" for the player it suits - for a nine-year-old who will outgrow the bat in a season, or for backyard and indoor cricket, it is the sensible purchase.

Grade is mostly cosmetic

English willow is graded 1 through 5 (and Players / Pro grades above that). The grade describes appearance, not performance: number of straight grains, evenness of colour, absence of knots and butterfly stain. A Grade 2 blade with eight straight grains and a good press will outperform a cosmetically flawless Grade 1 that has been pressed poorly. Grain count is a weak proxy for quality - between six and twelve straight grains is the usual competitive range, and more grains generally means a bat that performs sooner but has a shorter life, while fewer grains means a bat that takes longer to open up and then lasts.

If budget is the constraint, drop cosmetic grade before you drop willow type.

Size

Junior bats are sized by the player's height, never by age.

Size Player height
Size 3 129-137 cm
Size 4 137-144 cm
Size 5 144-150 cm
Size 6 150-157 cm
Harrow 157-163 cm
Short Handle (SH) 163-185 cm
Long Blade / Long Handle 185 cm+

The most common buying mistake is going a size up so a child "grows into it". An oversized bat is too heavy to swing from the top of the backlift, so the player drags it through the line and drops the hands - a habit that outlasts the bat by years. Buy to fit now.

Weight and pick-up

Senior bats typically run 2lb 7oz to 3lb (roughly 1,100-1,360 g). Heavier is not more powerful: bat speed through the ball matters more than mass, and a bat you cannot control in the last over of a spell is a liability. Pick-up - how heavy the bat feels when you lift it, which depends on where the mass sits - matters more than the number on the sticker. Two bats of identical weight can feel a pound apart.

Profile and sweet spot

Preparation and care

Every English willow bat needs knocking in before match use - typically 6+ hours of progressive mallet work on the edges and face, then throwdowns with an old ball. Skipping it is the single most common cause of early face cracking and edge damage. Oil sparingly with raw linseed (a teaspoon, worked in, no more than three times a season) unless the bat has a pre-applied protective face. Store out of the car boot: heat and humidity swings dry the blade and shrink the handle binding.

Cricket For All knocks in bats bought here free of charge, and offers a Bat Match Ready service covering oiling, knocking in, edge rolling, face, edge and toe protection. Repairs, re-handles and weight reduction are done in-house at the Gilles Plains workshop.

Common questions about cricket bat

How long should a cricket bat last?

A well-prepared English willow bat used in club cricket typically lasts one to three seasons. Life depends far more on preparation and care than on price: a properly knocked-in Grade 3 bat with face protection routinely outlasts an unprepared Grade 1. Bats do not have a fixed lifespan - they die from accumulated edge and toe damage, from being used before they are ready, or from moisture.

Why does my new bat have cracks in the face?

Surface cracking on the face and edges is normal and expected on English willow. Willow is a natural fibre that compresses in use. Hairline surface cracks are cosmetic and can be contained with a scuff sheet. Cracks that run into the edge, open under pressure, or appear at the shoulder or splice are structural and need attention from a repair workshop.

Can a bat be made lighter?

Yes, within limits. Weight reduction removes timber from the back of the blade, and sometimes from the face, changing the profile and pick-up as well as the weight. It cannot be undone. Cricket For All performs weight reduction in-house at $100 for back-only and $135 front and back. It is worth doing when a bat is otherwise right but unmanageable, and not worth doing to save 20 grams.

What does "pressing" mean?

Pressing is the factory process of compressing the blade face under a roller to harden the fibres so they can withstand ball impact. Under-pressed bats feel lively but break early; over-pressed bats are durable but dead. Pressing quality is invisible on the shelf and is the main reason two bats of identical grade can perform very differently.

Should I buy a bat online without picking it up?

Weight and pick-up are personal, and pick-up cannot be judged from a specification. If you can get to the Gilles Plains store, pick up several bats in your size and weight band before choosing. If you are buying online, buy on size and weight range first and treat profile as secondary.

Does a heavier bat hit the ball further?

No. Momentum is mass times velocity, and bat speed is the variable most players can actually change. A bat you can swing fast and control through the line will outperform a heavier bat you drag. Most players bat better a few ounces lighter than they think.

What to buy alongside

A bat grip, anti-scuff sheet and toe guard extend a bat's life from its first innings.
