How to choose wicketkeeping gear

Keeping equipment is specialised and cannot be substituted with batting equivalents.

Keeping gloves

Webbed between thumb and index finger - this is what distinguishes them from batting gloves and what makes a one-handed catch possible. The palm is soft leather for feel and to deaden the ball; the backs are padded but far less rigid than batting gloves, because the keeper needs to feel the ball into the hands.

Fit should be snug with the fingers reaching the ends. Sizes run Boys / Youth / Small Adult / Adult. Gloves are always sold as a pair and are handed by design.

Inners

Cotton or chamois inners are mandatory, not optional. Keepers take hundreds of impacts a session and the inner is the primary shock layer inside the glove. Many keepers wear two pairs, or an inner plus a thin sorbo pad in the palm. Inners also absorb the sweat that would otherwise destroy the glove leather.

Wicketkeeping: why the equipment is different

A wicketkeeper takes more repetitions than anyone else on the field. Across a day they will rise from a squat several hundred times and take the ball hundreds of times, sometimes at pace off an edge, sometimes turning sharply from a spinner. Equipment designed for batting does not survive that, and does not allow it.

The webbing

The web between thumb and index finger is the defining feature of a keeping glove. It creates a continuous surface into which the ball can be taken one-handed, and it is what makes a diving take possible. Batting gloves have no web and separate rigid fingers; taking a ball one-handed in them is close to impossible.

Soft palms and feel

Keeping glove palms are soft, supple leather chosen to deaden the ball rather than repel it. A ball taken into a hard surface bounces out. This is also why keeping gloves wear faster than batting gloves and why inners matter so much - the palm is soft by design and cannot take sweat saturation.

Inners are not optional

This is the point most club keepers get wrong. The inner is the primary shock-absorbing layer inside a keeping glove, and the glove is not designed to work without one. Many keepers wear two pairs of cotton inners, or a chamois inner plus a thin sorbo rubber pad in the palm, particularly when standing up to spin where the ball arrives fast and unsighted.

Inners also absorb the sweat that would otherwise destroy the palm leather within a season.

Keeping pads

Shorter and lighter than batting pads, with a flatter knee roll and less bulk behind the knee. The keeper's squat requires the pad to fold; a batting pad's knee roll fights that fold, slows the rise to the stumps and causes knee and lower back fatigue over a long day.

Keeping pads protect the shin and instep against balls that beat the gloves and against deflections, which is a lower-energy impact profile than facing a bowler - hence the lighter build.

Helmets for keepers

A keeper standing up to the stumps is closer to the bat than any fielder and takes deflections at short range with no reaction time. Cricket Australia mandates helmets for junior keepers standing up, and it is standard practice at senior level. The helmet should meet the same standard as a batter's, with the grille correctly set.

Care

Keeping gloves absorb more sweat than any other item of cricket equipment. Air them after every session - never sealed in the bag - and dry away from direct heat, which hardens the palm leather permanently. Replace inners regularly rather than washing the gloves themselves. A pair of keeping gloves given basic care lasts several seasons; the same pair left damp in a bag lasts one.

Wicketkeeping terms

A note on junior sizing

This item is junior-sized. Junior cricket equipment is sized by the player's measurements, not their age, and should be bought to fit now rather than to be grown into. Oversized equipment moves out of position on impact, which reduces the protection it offers, and in the case of bats it teaches technique faults that outlast the equipment. If you are between sizes, the Gilles Plains staff can measure and fit in store.

Common questions about wicketkeeping gear

Can I keep in batting gloves?

No. Keeping gloves are webbed between thumb and index finger, which is what makes a one-handed take possible, and have soft palms for feel. Batting gloves are rigid across the back and unwebbed.

Do I need keeping inners?

Yes - they are not optional. A keeper takes hundreds of impacts a session, and the inner is the primary shock layer inside the glove. Many keepers wear two pairs, or an inner plus a thin sorbo palm pad.

How should keeping gloves fit?

Snug, with fingers reaching the ends. Loose gloves rotate on the hand and cost you the ball. Sizes run Boys, Youth, Small Adult and Adult.

Are keeping pads different from batting pads?

Yes - shorter, lighter, with less bulk at the knee roll, because the keeper rises from a squat hundreds of times a session. Batting pads restrict the crouch and slow the rise to the stumps.

Does a keeper need a helmet?

Standing up to the stumps, yes, with a grille to the same standard as a batter's. Cricket Australia mandates this for juniors.

How do I stop keeping gloves going hard?

Air after every session and dry away from heat. Keeping gloves absorb more sweat than any other item of cricket kit; heat-drying hardens the leather permanently.
