Whites and coloureds

Traditional formats require cream or white clothing; limited-overs and junior competitions increasingly use coloured kit. Club and association rules dictate which - check before buying, especially for junior grades where the club supplies playing shirts.

Fabric

Modern playing shirts and trousers use polyester or poly-cotton blends chosen for moisture-wicking and quick drying rather than the heavy cotton drill of the past. Look for UPF-rated fabric: cricket is played through the middle of an Australian summer day, and a long-sleeve UPF shirt is more effective and more comfortable than repeated sunscreen application.

Long sleeve versus short sleeve

Long sleeves offer sun protection and, for bowlers, slightly better arm warmth early in a spell. Short sleeves are cooler. Many players carry both.

Fit

Trousers should sit at the natural waist and break at the top of the shoe - too long and they catch under the spikes when running. Shirts should allow full shoulder rotation without pulling out of the waistband in the bowling action.

Sun protection

Wide-brim hats and caps are both standard. A wide brim protects the neck and ears, which is where cricketers accumulate sun damage over decades. Sunglasses with an interchangeable or high-contrast lens help significantly in the field against a red ball on green grass.

Care

Wash whites separately and promptly - grass and ball lacquer stains set. Avoid fabric softener on moisture-wicking fabrics; it coats the fibres and destroys the wicking.

Playing clothing and the Australian season

Cricket in Australia is played in the hottest part of the year, in the hottest part of the day, for six to eight hours at a time. Clothing is a heat-management and sun-protection problem before it is a style question.

Sun exposure

A fielder in a standard Australian club match spends several hours in direct sun. Cumulative UV exposure across a playing career is the reason cricketers show up disproportionately in skin cancer statistics. The practical implications:

• Long sleeves outperform sunscreen on the arms because they do not need reapplication and do not sweat off.
• UPF-rated fabric blocks a specified fraction of UV; UPF 50+ blocks around 98%. Ordinary thin white cotton offers considerably less protection than most people assume, especially when wet.
• Collars and wide brims protect the neck and ears, which are the sites most commonly missed by sunscreen and most commonly affected.

Heat and moisture

Modern playing fabrics are polyester or poly-cotton blends engineered to move moisture from the skin to the outer surface where it evaporates. This works considerably better than cotton, which absorbs sweat and holds it against the skin, becoming heavy and cold when the sun goes down.

Two practical points: wash moisture-wicking fabrics without fabric softener, which coats the fibres and destroys the wicking; and carry a spare shirt for a full day in the field, because a saturated shirt stops wicking.

• Trousers sit at the natural waist and break at the top of the shoe. Too long and they catch under the spikes when turning for a second run. Too short and the ankle is exposed when sliding.
• Shirts must allow full shoulder rotation. A bowler should be able to take the arm through a delivery action without the shirt pulling out of the waistband or binding across the back.
