Protecting a bat: what actually works

A cricket bat is a consumable made of natural fibre, and most of what shortens its life is preventable with items costing a fraction of the bat.

Face protection

An anti-scuff sheet is a self-adhesive protective film applied to the blade face. It does not stop the willow compressing, but it contains surface cracking, prevents cracks from opening and spreading, and protects against the abrasion of a rough outfield or a hard ball. It adds a few grams. On any English willow bat it is worth applying from new.

Edge protection

Edges take glancing impacts and split along the grain. Fibre tape along the edges contains this. Bats with pronounced edges - which is most modern bats - benefit most, because the deep edge that increases the hitting area also increases the exposed area.

Toe protection

Australian outfields are damp early and late in the day, and willow absorbs moisture through the exposed end grain at the toe. The toe then swells, softens, and splits on a yorker. A toe guard or a coat of a flexible sealant prevents the most common single mode of bat failure.

Oil
